Monae bell

founder & designer

BLACKTAG’S founder and designer, Monae Bell, grew up a child who loved playing dress up with her BRATZ Dolls. Then she became a girl who loved to dress up her school uniform and make it unique. She then, unofficially, became best dressed in her high school and went on to pursue a degree in fashion at Purdue University that failed to come to fruition due to financial issues.

I think everything was destined to be the way it was. I used to feel bad about not finishing college because that was all I was ever taught, but I learned sooo much more about business and about life being here with my mom and learning from her operating her own business.

Our story

I learned there are so many more ways to accomplish your dreams. It’s not only one road to them.

BLACKTAG is a product of all of my experiences and lessons. It reprints me and people who look like me who have a dream.

BLACKTAG was created in June 2020. Although 2020 came with many losses, the opportunity aligned for me to be able to produce a dream of mine. Creating BLACKTAG was definitely one of the only bright spots of 2020. I was constantly slapped in the face with what all of us already know deep down, life is too short and time is too precious to wait on ‘the perfect time’ to chase your dream. Her dream- to become a fashion designer.

What I’ve always wanted to do was not only be a designer, but also create a space where people feel inspired to be their most confident self. 9 times out of 10, when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you can go out and conquer the world and take some of the inspiration we try to give and go give it to someone else.

With every collection, I hope to evolve not only as a person, but as a designer and as a brand. I hope to be a representation of what it looks like when you embrace all your experience, good or bad, learn, adjust and just simply NEVER QUIT.
